- containers per year. In May, 1999, Hyundai began shipping through the Port
of Tacoma and increased this average. The Port handles more than 13 million
tons of cargo annually and ranks among the top 25 ports in the world and sixth
in the United States. In 1998, The REGINA MAERSK, the largest container
carrier in the world called on the Port of Tacoma. It carries 6,000 containers
and has the capability to hold 1400 refrigerated containers. It could hold 12.5
million chickens, 28 million grapefruit or 54 million apples. The Port's
Sitcum Waterway has a 46 to 48 foot depth to accommodate this ship.
If you want access to Alaska, Tacoma is, of course, a logical choice - over 80
percent of all waterborne cargo from the "Lower 48" goes to Alaska though
Tacoma.
Who are the major trade partners with the Port of Tacoma?
Japan, Tacoma's key trade partner, is followed by China, Taiwan, Thailand
and the Korean Republic. Recently, Medallion Foods, a subsidiary of Tokyo-
based Nisshin Flour Milling Company opened a $29 million plant to make
pasta products. This is the first plant to be sited by Nisshin in the United
States.
Major exports from Tacoma include logs, lumber, apples, meat, seafood
products, cereals and heavy machinery. Major imports include motor vehicles
and parts, textiles, toys, footwear and electronics.
The largest shippers are Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) and Sealand.
In 1985, Tacoma became the first port in the United State with dockside
intermodal rail facilities. The Port of Tacoma stays at the front of the
international ship and cargo handling technology.

Composites - that makes wings and exotic composite materials for Boeing as
well as sporting goods - is also a key employer here.
Tacoma is home to two major military facilities, Fort Lewis Army Post (third
largest in nation) and McChord Airforce base, Home of 62nd Wing, MAC.
Fort Lewis, Home of I Corps, is rated the second best post in the U.S. Army by
the Department of Defense. In 1999, McChord will be the only West Coast
air based for the C-17 Globemaster III, the new aircraft to replace the C-141.
